The Hidden Profit Sitting Inside Your Business

If you're running a service-based business, there's one thing I want you to think hard about this week:

Do you have unused capacity?

That could be:

  • A van or vehicle not in use every working day

  • Technicians or consultants with gaps in their schedule

  • A workspace or treatment room sitting empty for hours at a time

  • Staff being paid for time that isn’t being sold or utilised

  • Equipment or tools that are rarely used but still being financed or insured

  • A team member who could take on more responsibility or billable work

  • I could go on . . .

When your fixed costs are already covered, filling unused capacity is the fastest route to more profit.

Why?

Because most of that extra revenue flows straight to the bottom line. You're not increasing overhead. You’re just making better use of what you’ve already paid for.

But to know how valuable that extra work is, you need to know one number:

👉 Your gross margin.

If you don’t know it (or haven’t reviewed it in a while) make it a priority this week. It tells you how much money is left after delivering your service, before overheads.

And once you have it, think about these questions:

  • What % of your working hours (or staff hours) are actually being billed?

  • What would one more customer per week mean in profit terms?

  • Are you making enough effort to fill the gaps, or just coasting because the lights are still on?

Often, it’s not a new product or radical change that drives growth.

It’s better use of what you already have.

You won’t hear it, but unused capacity can bleed your business dry.
